SAN JOSE — A man was found shot to death near the east foothills in the city’s first homicide of 2020, police said.
Officers responded to reports of a person shot at Clayton Road, near Squeri Drive, at about 10:19 p.m. Wednesday, said San Jose Police Department Sgt. Enrique Garcia.
Arriving officers found a man in the street suffering from at least one gunshot wound, Garcia said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The man’s identity will be released following his formal identification by the coroner’s office and notification of next of kin.
No suspects have been identified, Garcia said, and the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death remain unclear. Situated on the edge of East San Jose, Squeri Drive appears to be a residential road that dead-ends further into the hills behind Clayton Road.
The incident marks the city’s first shooting death and first homicide so far this year. As of the end of 2019, 33 homicides had been recorded in San Jose, which is around the average for the city in the last decade.
Clayton Road will be closed in both directions between Squeri Drive and Mt. Pleasant Road until about 8:30 a.m. as police gather evidence and clear the scene.
