Boris Johnson, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, had to ask the European Union for an extension to the original Oct. 31 deadline set for Britain’s departure from the 27-nation group. Johnson’s request to European leaders arrived in separate letters on Saturday after the British Parliament postponed a decision on whether to back his divorce deal in its first Saturday session in the House of Commons in 37 years — the first since the Falklands War of 1982.

The vote in the House of Commons sought to ensure that the U.K. cannot crash out of the EU without a divorce deal on the scheduled departure date, AP reported. Johnson, who struck the agreement with EU leaders earlier this week, told AP he was not “daunted or dismayed” by the result and would press on to complete Brexit in less than two weeks.

By Sunday, the BBC reported Johnson had the votes needed in the House of Commons, one of two legislative bodies in the U.K.’s Parliament.
