After a dangerous start to the PG&E-initiated power outage, the Lamorinda area settled down to a Thursday without power.

Without electricity, many businesses closed including the Orinda Theatre and Loards Ice Cream shop. The power shutoff also snarled traffic in several places as motorists not used to driving without traffic lights had to be cautious around intersections. To help out, authorities put up temporary stop signs in the three-city area of Lafayette, Orinda and Moraga.

While businesses on the ground were closed, helicopters in the air inspected lines around the three cities. Earlier in the day, firefighters snuffed out a wildfire that spurred evacuations in Moraga.

As of Thursday night, PG&E was restoring power to Bay Area residents. The outage left more than 735,000 homes and businesses in the dark. The photo gallery above shows the impact of the shutoff.
