ANTIOCH — A man is in county jail after his arrest on suspicion of arson Tuesday in connection with a vegetation fire at a regional park, authorities said.
On Tuesday afternoon, an East Bay Regional Park District ranger was on patrol near the Somersville Road entrance into Black Diamond Mines Regional Preserve when he saw a man squirting lighter fluid onto a burning brush fire near the road’s shoulder, parks poilce said in a statement Tuesday evening.
The ranger, who also works as an on-call regional park district firefighter, was able to put out the fire with help from Contra Costa County Fire Protection District firefighters who responded to the scene and collected evidence from the scene.
The fire burned an area about 30 by 50 feet, as well as a 20-feet section of wood fencing, but no structures were threatened, officials said.
Park district police also responded and soon found the man, identified as Jesus Reyez-Ambriz, 38, and arrested him on suspicion of arson. Reyez-Ambriz was taken to Martinez county jail and held on $75,000 bail.
Anyone with information should call the East Bay Regional Park District police tip line at 510-690-6549.
