At least 100 people attended a “Grill Your Government” rally at City Hall in Oakland on Tuesday as protests over a white woman calling police on African-Americans barbecuing near Lake Merritt continued this week.
The woman complained a family was using a charcoal grill in an area on Lakeshore Avenue where only propane grills were allowed, as Oakland resident Michelle Snider filmed the incident. The video which has since gone viral.
Cat Brooks, Tur-Ha Ak, Snider and many others spoke during the rally, which was held before the City Council meeting. Activists attended the meeting afterwards to voice their concerns to city leaders.
A “BBQ’N While Black” event will be held this Sunday on Lakeshore Avenue, the site of the controversy attracting national attention. Here’s the viral video if you haven’t seen it.
