A pair of small earthquakes struck the area near Gilroy early Tuesday morning, less than two weeks after a cluster of quakes rattled the Danville area.
The first, stronger quake struck at 4:38 a.m, about 9 km east of Gilroy. The 3.3 magnitude temblor measured 8.1 km in depth. About six minutes later, a 2.6 magnitude quake hit the area. That quake started 8.2 km below the surface.
“It looks like just there were just two in the immediate area,” said Zachary Reeves, a seismologist at the United State Geological Survey’s National Earthquake Information Center.
“The second one was a few minutes after the first,” he added. “It’s pretty common in active areas.
