MARTINEZ — For the second time in a eight days, a Contra Costa inmate was found dead in a jail facility, due to an apparent suicide.
On Tuesday, 52-year-old Phillip Andrew Jacobson, of Antioch, was found hanging in a shower at the Martinez Detention Facility. Jacobson was facing eight child molestation charges and being held in lieu of $4.15 million bail, police said.
Last week, 74-year-old Linda Thomas hanged herself inside her cell at the West Contra Costa Detention Facility, in Richmond. Thomas had just been convicted of murdering her sister and attempting to murder her brother-in-law, and was facing life without parole.
Jacobson’s death marks the fourth time this year a Contra Costa jail inmate died. Two deaths in January were “health related,” police said at the time, though the coroner later said one of the men had overdosed on Fentanyl.
Jacobson was arrested July 11 last year and had been in the jail ever since. After he was discovered around 7:45 a.m. Monday, officials attempted CPR and called an ambulance, police said. Jacobson was pronounced dead at the scene.
Per county protocol, Jacobson’s death will be reviewed by a public coroner’s inquest hearing , where witnesses will be called to testify and jurors will make a determination for cause of death. In the meantime, the Contra Costa District Attorney will conduct a third-party review of the incident.
