Movement shows we are not to measure people by the pain they inflict
Thank you to the Rev. Deborah Lee for her forthright articulation of the moral values at the heart of the Sanctuary Movement, both in its past, and present, manifestations (“1980s sanctuary movement undergoing resurgence,” Opinion section, June 10).
She makes it clear that as a society we are to measure the strength of a person or policy not by the amount of pain they inflict or suffering they cause but by whether they are effective in creating communities where, as the Rev. Lee wrote, “people feel that they can participate, contribute and be respected as full human beings.”
