A 90-year-old Walnut Creek California woman too weak to get out of her bathtub was rescued after three days during which she drank water collected in a rubber duck to stay hydrated.

Shirley Madsen was found in her Walnut Creek home by her daughter after the family became concerned she hadn’t returned phone calls. Madsen was released Wednesday from the hospital, having suffered from dry skin, bed sores and a deep tissue bruise.

Madsen had climbed into the tub May 27 after a senior’s trip to a casino. She had not eaten since breakfast and found she was too weak to get out. Without a phone nearby, she couldn’t get help. She was also too weak to cup water in her hands so she used a rubber duck as a cup. She repeatedly added hot water to the tub to stay warm.

Normally I would come up with some sarcastic remark or joke about this but in an effort to respect my elders, I am glad she is alright. Good thing she had family that was worried about her and was able to show up to help. Makes me feel bad for all the grandparents out there with no family around.

All kidding aside, she’s lucky to have such a good family.
