It was all over the news and actually broken on Twitter. A US Airways passenger jet made a crash landing in the Hudson River shortly after take of from New York’s LaGuardia Airport heading to Charlotte, N.C.. The internet was all a buzz with realtime information on the water landing of the Airbus A-320 after the pilot hit a flock of geese. The great news is that all of the 148 passengers on-board the plane were rescued. The pilot Chesley B. “Sully” Sullenberger is being called a hero by passengers, law enforcement and witnesses to the event.

Chesley Sullenberger is a hero and an East Bay native, residing in Danville Ca. Before the mainstream news started showing live footage, people from the area were spreading information on Twitter. A Twitter user Janis Krums was on the Ferry first on the scene of the US Airways crash and took this picture with his camera phone and posted it.

I love the internet. Within minutes of the crash pictures were being posted online. You can see in this photo by by grego! that before any resue craft arrived passengers were already exiting the plane into the life rafts.

As soon as mainstream news caught on, I was watching the event unfold live on MSNBC. The most amazing part of this plane crash is that the entire US Airways jet stayed intact after the crash. The reason for that, the excellent reaction and skills of the pilot Chesley Sullenberger.
US Airways should give this man a promotion and use him as the poster boy for water landings. Other than some understandable swearing on the flight recorder, Chesley Sullenberger handled the pressures of a water landing like a real hero.

Thats one hell of a bad ass pilot. What an incredible job of landing the plane he did. To label him a hero doesn’t do him justice.I watched live interviews with the passengers. One of the passengers was asked if he was scared when the pilot announced they should prepare for a hard landing. The passenger told the reporter, “Shit yah I was scared!!!!!”. I started laughing and I Tivo’d that one. Too funny. What a day they had!!!

I live down the street from him. The news vans took over the entire street. I’m happy for him and his family but I want to park my car!

See…I knew there was a reason they tell you about that flotation device under your butt.
Good discussion of how Internet worked on this story, too.
Good Job Mayor.

[...] Chesley Sullenberger came home to a heroes welcome. The City of Danville put together a ceremony to welcome home the man that pulled off one of the most extraordinary water landings in history. The story made headlines around the world and the city he calls home spaired no effort to show their appreciation to Sully the pilot of Flight 1549 who safely landed a passenger jet on the icy waters of the Hudson River last week.
