The Concord Police Department will be conducting a combined DUI and Drivers License checkpoint on September 5, 2009. The checkpoint will be operational between the hours of 9:00 p.m. to 3:00 a.m., and will be held on eastbound Willow Pass Rd. between Franquette Ave. and Market St.. In an effort to reduce the number of persons killed and injured in alcohol involved crashes, DUI checkpoints are conducted to identify offenders, get them off the street and educate the public on the dangers of impaired driving.

All too often, members of our community are senselessly injured or killed on local roadways by impaired drivers. This DUI/Drivers License checkpoint is an effort to reduce those tragedies, as well as insuring that drivers have a valid driver’s license. A major component of these checkpoints is to increase awareness of the dangers of impaired driving and to encourage sober designated drivers.
A DUI checkpoint is a proven effective method for achieving this goal. By publicizing these enforcement and education efforts, the Concord Police Department believes motorists can be deterred from drinking and driving.
Traffic volume and weather permitting, all vehicles may be checked and drivers who are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs will be arrested. Our objective is to send a clear message to those who are considering driving a motor vehicle after consuming alcohol and/or drugs – Drunk Driving, Over the Limit, Under Arrest. The public is encouraged to help keep roadways safe by calling 911 if they see a suspected impaired driver.
Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
- You have been warned but then again it doesn’t matter because you’ll be too drunk to remember when you go through the checkpoint.

Not sure that I agree with letting the rest of the world know about a police checkpoint before it happens. I get that they want people to know that they are out there and will catch you if you drink and drive, but it seems like giving someone a heads up only encourages them to take a different route home. If the police were really serious about dealing with this issue they’d have a rule that anyone caught DUI has to spend a min. 30 days in jail on their first offense. I bet people would think a lot more seriously about driving after a few drinks if they knew that their lives would be disrupted instead of having to go to some cheeseball class and no one ever knowing about their mistake.
