Does the CoCo Sheriff Have a Policy of Giving Out Assault Rifles?

I heard this on the news and Claycord wrote up a post about this. What I’m not seeing on TV or in the local blogosphere is an explanation. This sounds like a bad episode of CSI Miami but Horatio Caine isn’t on the case.
Three Colt semi-automatic assault rifles and a Remington shotgun were taken from cars parked at a lot in the 1900 block of Muir Road, location of the agency’s field operations and investigative divisions. This is military class weaponry and now in the hands of thugs. By the reports given, the lot was classified as secure but obviously not secure enough if a group of people could get into the lot and extract these weapons using industrial strength tools to break into the vehicle and the locks holding the rifles.
I don’t know too much about civilian law enforcement. I was always on the other side of the wire in the military but a weapon was NEVER left in a vehicle unguarded. That’s what we had arms rooms for. Does the Sheriff Dept. have a lot of cars parked with assault rifles just sitting in them? I’m baffled.
These crooks sound like they knew what they were doing and did some good prep work ahead of the crime.
In the most recent incident, the burglars cut through a fence and used “heavy-duty equipment” to pry open the patrol car doors. In one instance, a softball-size hole had been bored into a car’s door panel, Terry said. In freeing the weapons that were secured by harnesses and electric locks, the burglars severely damaged the cars.
“They came prepared,” Terry said.
The lot has no video surveillance. Investigators believe that multiple burglars were involved, and that they are locally based. - CCTimes
Is this what budget cuts are costing us? Can the Sheriff Dept. not secure these weapons in a locked cage and only issue them when the officers go on duty? No surveillance coverage of a parking lot filled with assault rifles? I have a million questions and I am sure the FBI and ATF are wondering the same thing.
I understand that criminals use guns but having criminals running around with military weapons scares me more than the average crook.
Anyone with information about either burglary can contact sheriff’s investigators at 925-313-2600 or 925-313-2660, or sheriff’s dispatch at 925-646-2441.

I would never have believed that they left rifles in cars parked in a lot with no video coverage. What morons!!! Thanks for getting a few more people killed CoCo Sheriff Dept.

I heard on the news that the FBI and ATF are helping look for the guns. I doubt they will find them. They have NO witnesses and no evidence. All they are doing is gathering the usual suspects and hoping for the best.

Lets hope these weapons don’t get used on them. Last year a pistol was stolen out of a San Mateo County S.O. personal vehicle. Then some idiot used it to start robbing banks in San Jose if I remember correctly. I know these deputies are fully aware of this threat. But, thats why they’ve got an equipment room. These weapons are supposed to be checked out daily, not left in a patrol unit. Lets hope they get recovered before someone gets hurt. Whoever stole these weapons wanted them badly. Weapons were also stolen last month from the CHP office in Pacheco.

The weapon in the picture is an M-4. A carbine version of the AR platform. But not an AR-15.For the sake of accuracy.

Good call. I just pulled a picture that resembled the rifles stolen. The one pictured is not the exact model of assault rifle stolen but they do look similar.

Military style weapon? you guys do know that it is legal to build these types of rifles in CA, and that this rifle is no more dangerous then any other gun in the hands of a criminal. in fact these guns are probably safer then most guns in the hands of criminals due to their finiky nature and ammo needs.
with ammo prices the way they currently are i just dont see your average thug paying a dollar a shot. most likely the people who stole these knew what they were after and will sell them for parts.

“you guys do know that it is legal to build these types of rifles in CA”
This is classed as an assault weapon & a felony to possess in CA & no you can’t biuld one.

If you only have a ten round clip on it and get rid of the pistol grip then YES you can build one of these rifles in CA! Aaron’s point is intact, it is no more dangerous than any other gun that shoots the same bullet and is semi auto.
The point is, if you are a criminal you will not care about the law and you can get a thirty round clip and ignore the pistol grip rule anyway, so you people should stop misleading people about the dangers of these weapons when they are easy for criminals to get if they want them– however we rarely even see them being used in crimes anyhow. People (liberals) are just afraid of the image of these guns because of how they look, that is all, there is no logic at all to these overblown fears of these guns being in criminal hands!
