Concord Has First Bay Area Swine Flu Death

A 9-year-old Concord girl who had been diagnosed with the H1N1 virus died Friday, marking the Bay Area’s first swine flu-related death.
Contra Costa Health Services announced the death of, Karen Perez, Thursday after a state laboratory confirmed Wednesday that she had the H1N1 virus in addition to a secondary bacterial infection, Contra Costa Public Health Director Dr. Wendel Brunner said.
The coroner’s office confirmed it is investigating the death along with the health department, but the Perez’s official cause of death is pending further test results.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 100,000 people nationwide have been infected with swine flu, and 20 deaths have been reported. State officials say California has seen about 576 cases of the virus. – Source

This is a very sad news, such a young little girl dying from the H1N1 virus. Here in Japan (and many other Asian countries) we are trying our best to control the spread of this virus. In Asia, we already know how terrible this situation can become, but I guess folks in the USA still do not understand how bad this virus may be or heaven forbid, mutate into a more deadly one. RIP little girl from Concord.

I was really frightened when the epidemic broke, then I saw it was very minor, but I know the real thing is just around the corner and its going to wipe us out without much warning.
