Your Kid Is Only Worth $109.50 Per Day

Not only are your children attached to a price tag but the Pittsburg Unified School District is trying to make sure they can collect on them even though they were out of class. The students were not cutting class, they were out because Highlands Elementary had a few cases of swine flu and the school was closed. On top of that parents from other schools in the area kept their children out of additional schools because of the fear of contracting the H1N1 virus.
At $109.50 per child per day, the total bill the Pittsburg Unified School District is trying to collect on is $28,221.46 for all students out of school during the swine flu outbreak in Contra Costa County. Should they be able to collect from the State?
With the issues facing Arnold Schwarzenegger and State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell, I doubt any money is going to be changing hands. Maybe the MDUSD will get some type of credit but I doubt our schools are going to see the money.

Sadly my child will be worth even less than that once the state cuts another million from the budget.

If that is the amount they get per student per day for attendance, we are in trouble. 109.50 x 180 = $19,710 per year per student. Private Schools in the are less or about that and would presumably provide a better education.
De La Salle $13,500
Doris-Eaton $18,000
Prospect Sierra $18,000 – $20,000
St. Francis of Assisi $6,300
Athenian School $20,000-$25,000
Many Catholic or Christian school in the area range from 5-10k as well.

Koka, Highlands is not in the MDUSD, it was Shore Acres within the MDUSD that was closed for a couple of days. I guess that is not an important point. Where did the figure 109.50 come from? As someone pointed out that would equal over 19,000 per year , per student. Public schools do not get that much at all. I believe MDUSD is at less than 6000 per year , per student which puts it at less than 33.00 per day! I think MDUSD is now even less than 5700.00 per year, but I have to check my latest budget outline from the district.

$33. a day for each kid? No wonder we are in the situation we are in. The numbers came from an article the Contra Costa Times touched on.

You are right, it was Pittsburg Unified that was asking for the money. I’ll make the correction to the post. Thanks for pointing that out.

Koka, MDUSD also is asking for that money due to the health dept closure but for Shore Acres, it was closed I think for 2 or 3 days, much shorter than the anticipated week or two expected at first. There is a good article on the MDUSD blog written by either Paul or Gary about equity, it talks all about the money received by our district and those around us.
