BART Police Officer Arrested

Johannes Mehserle, the former BART police officer who shot and killed an unarmed man on an Oakland train platform on New Year’s Day, was arrested in Nevada today in connection with the shooting, The Chronicle has learned. Mehserle, 27, was taken into custody in Douglas County, Nevada, said Deputy Steve Velez of the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office. The arrest was also confirmed by David Chai, chief of staff to Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums. The story was broken by the San Francisco Chronicle.
WTF was this guy doing in Nevada? I would think that he was advised not to leave the State but maybe with the situation surrounding the event, it was allowed.

They had no choice. Any defense this man had is now gone. He owes all of us an explanation and an apology. He shot a man in the back, if it was an accident he should’ve stepped forward and told us. Now he’s headed to prison for a long time.

Sad, but I agree. Hiding from giving a statement just makes him look guilty.

Now their bring him back to the Bay Area. At least the protest tonight might not turn into a riot since he’s been arrested.

I cannot believe that he waived extradition. He could have stayed in Nevada, where at his extradition hearing, he could have explained that it was an accident and that his trial here is nothing but political cowtow. With a proper defense, Nevada could have declined to extradite him to what is surly a lynch mob mentality in the bay area.
At the very least, the trial will HAVE to be moved to someplace like San Diego due to pre trial publicity.

I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT YOU CAN’T BELIEVE IT. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT GRANT WAS A HUMAN BEING WHO MORE THAN LIKELY WAS LOVED BY SOMEONE ON THIS PLANET, AND BEYOND? CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT HE WAS LYING FACE DOWN ON A TRAIN PLATFORM, AND UNARMED SECONDS BEFORE HIS 22 YEARS OF LIFE WAS ERASED? WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO BELIEVE IT IF YOU WERE THE ONE WITH A BULLET IN YOUR BACK, ADMINISTERED BY A PUBLIC SERVANT, WHO WAS PAID TO PROTECT YOU? I CAN’T BELIEVE THAT YOU WERE’NT THERE TO TAKE OSCAR GRANT’S PLACE.
