All of this talk about crime in Concord got me wondering. I started looking into police fire and emergency scanners and wondering if I would ever use one. actually, I think I would become addicted to it and no more blogging. But after reading about police scanners and their 1000 channel memory and digital triple trunking functions I started to wonder if I would even be able to figure one out.

All the scanner does is cycle through a set frequency settings for radio traffic. Which made me wonder how I would ever go about finding the right frequencies to plug in for my area and listen to the Concord PD, Fire and CoCo Sheriff. It took a bit of looking but I think I found the right police, fire and emergency services for Concord. I am sure there are a bunch of people in the City of Concord listening to the everyday lives of Police and Firemen in the area. I would think there must be books of these things but I started looking online and found more than I was expecting. Not only did I find Concord Police Fire and Emergency but I found DVC Police and others.

I wouldn’t have bought a scanner just to listen to the police but listening to the mall security during Christmas will be entertaining.

I used to live with a scanner in my ear. I somehow was able to tune my brain to wake up to a Code 3 or Code 33, which typically meant the cops were racing their way somewhere. The trick with scanners is to understand what they’re saying. ‘6 adam 12, what’s you’re 20?” “I’m 10-19.” “Can you respond to a 459 at 1280 East Blvd?” “10-4.” It’s all a mixture of radio 10 and 112 codes, California penal codes, municipal and vehicle codes and some weirdness specific to each department. Once you listen for a while and get used to it, it’s amazing how much they can say with so few words.

Rob, right after returning home from Iraq, I would speak in codes all the time on my cell phone out of habit. My wife got a kick out of it when I would say “over” after every sentence. Maybe I’ll make a supplemental post on police lingo and what the codes are.
