Can I get a big glass of Concord Hateraide?

Concord has a whole lot of opinionated people online. It’s a wonder why our schools and roads have so many problems when someone feels this is noteworthy. I joined the local Concord blog scene just a couple weeks ago. As any blogger knows it takes time to build in enough content to actually get attention and even more time to develop a site worth visiting. Thanks (i guess) to the people of Concord my local blog is off to a rocking start. All because I started a blog and was audacious enough to buy mayorofconcord.com before anyone else. I’ve been blogging for about 10 years and of all the controversy I have seemed to fall into, this takes the cake.

A local blog that writes on education just put out a post slamming me and my site. Really, piss on my site all you want, it’s new, get over it. Don’t make personal attacks on me though. So in response to Mr. Writer of War on Education post, I have these answers.

1) There are lots of possibilities for a blog. Go start your own ORIGINAL one!  Copying Claycord is not only brainless and shallow but frankly, a waste of your time (Claycord has traffic you will never dream of.)

Brainless and shallow…I’ve been accused of worse. I’m not out to copy anyone’s blog posting pictures of flowers and reporting on graffiti on schools. This site may have some overlap to stories on other sites but that will not be the focus. If that were the case I would just write a RSS script to pull all of your feeds and add them to my site. As for traffic, I am sure Claycord gets a lot. I haven’t seen anything reputable in regards to numbers but I will agree that he gets his far share. That’s like me going out of my way to state that Google says my site has 239,566 unique hits so far this year and saying that means something to the world.

2) “I know you are but what am I?” Remember that silly phrase schoolkids use?  Annoying.  Enough said.

Yes…very silly, thanks for sharing.

3) Claycord has the backing of lots of local media, legit media. That is because the Mayor of Claycord has proved himself over time. That is called respect.

I am really happy that everyone is coming to the defense of Claycord. But does he need rescuing? Yes, his blog has been out much longer than the one I just put together and therefore has a lot of connections. Good for him and the community. It takes time to build a blog and I address this in my last post. Back in November of 07 when you started your site did you get a lot of visitors? This has nothing to do with respect except for the lack of respect a new blogger is getting from a community he is trying to be a part of.

4) Contrary to the claims on the website, proclaiming yourself Mayor of a City does not guarantee you anything, as you will find out.

I never said I was guaranteed or entitled anything. I am fully aware that I need to gain the readers I get and I appreciate all of them that I do have.

5) I’m all for getting another blogger out there. Just mind the rules of the road, will ya?

Help me understand the rules of the road. After 10 years of blogging I feel like I am now driving in England on the opposite side of the street.

6) Watch out…Brittney’s watching and you don’t want her annoyed at you.

Brittney and Chris Crocker have their hands full for the time being. Though I would be excited for them to mention my site, I’ll settle for the few blogs that seemed to take note.

Sorry, I thought through the mindlessness of your comment and figured you were actually talking of Brittney from KPIX. I’m glad she’s watching this. I can’t wait to hear her response to the bashing. Honestly, I don’t expect her to. I can’t even believe I’m responding to it but I don’t have the luxury of being anonymous like some other bloggers and that’s the world I’m living in I guess.

Well, I must say, all of the attention everyone is giving me and my little blog is definitely getting things rolling quicker than I expected. It usually takes me 4-6 months to get the amount of traffic that I have just this week. We need to remember the blog is only 2 weeks old and I unlike some people do this in my spare time. Local blogging seems to be more dangerous than Iraq. At least there I knew who the enemy was. I completely understand that the site needs to be developed more. I was not expecting all of this attention after just a couple of weeks. I guess that’s my fault. I just can’t comprehend why other bloggers are so eager to bash others so quickly. Of all the sites I work on, local blogging is by far the most complicated as far as acceptance goes. I almost feel like I’m debating with a bunch of illogical people that just like to hear themselves speak.

Halfway to Concord seems to be the only person that thinks I’m doing alright.

Koka, You don’t need to apologize to anyone. We all sometimes take ourselves way too seriously. It’s unfortunate when some fans of one camp or another turn diveristy into “us” v. “them.”

Two things are true: There is a big difference between social media blogs and 80s-style BBS chat sites, and how people sometimes slip and lose perspective when they identify strongly with one or the other. Secondly, there is plenty of room out there for lots of blogs to serve various local communities and tastes.

I look forward to seeing your site grow and make a contribution.

I guess he’s right. There must be an overwhelming US vs. THEM mentality within local bloggers. Really weird dynamic but I guess that’s what I got myself into. So instead of writing about Concord, I am writing about the large glass of hateraide that is getting passed around. Can’t we just be one team?

I don’t hate you at all, Koka. I am entitled to disagree with what you do, just as you are entitled to write up what you did. If you read some of my comments, I think you have a lot of potential to be interesting – your background alone is interesting. A better question is whether you can come up with your own style and design. It is not about needing time to grow an audience; it is about having something that an audience wants to read. You asked “Can’t we just be one team?” That is your call. We’ll see what you do with that.

@MisterWriter thanks for the comment. Everyone is valued their opinion and can disagree with me as much as they want. Local blogging is new water for me and I guess I need to wear my floaties for a bit longer. Like most blogs, this one will take on a life of it’s own and I will be adding original content as I can. I don’t want the life this blogs takes on as one of persecution. I am just not accustomed to getting so much hate mail from people in my own neighborhoods. I have plans for the site that take time to implement and as you know writing content takes time. I don’t want to get into the day by day activities of Concord’s business. I’d much rather find something in the city that needs to be fixed or highlighted and write about that. You have a book and that couldn’t have been produced in a matter of weeks. Of which, where does one find out if they are an idiot or not? I appreciate you responding to my post and I do hope that I can make this blog into something people are happy with. Thanks.

To: The Mayor of Concord- I learned of your website a few days ago. I remember when the Mayor of Claycord was trolling The Contra Costa Times and putting his information down on the comments area. Readers blasted him for it, but he continued. You have every right to do what you’re doing. The Claycord site has become classless and tracky due to his so called “Council members”. They attack people for no reason as does the Mayor of Claycord. He also deletes posts that he doesn’t agree with, not allowing discussions on matters he supports. Thank you for your military service you now have a new reader. Good luck!!!

Concord police is in pursuit of some black males right now east bound highway 4 towards Pittsburg. I don’t know why yet, but they are considered armed and danderous!!

  6. John Says:

It sounds like the vehicle pulled over in Pittsburg, they are taking suspects into custody. One of the “David” units said that it looks like a suspect they were looking for was inside the vehicle. The suspect was wanted for Assault on a peace officer, assault with a deadly weapon, Interfering with a peace officer and I believe robbery. A job well done by CPD!!

  7. John Says:

Mr. Mayor you may want to follow up on this one. This may be a huge story if these guys turn out to be the robbers who have hit Concord banks and businesses over the last 6 months.
